Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalisation has gone through a dip in the price over the weekend. But in brighter news for it, it can now count on one positive development towards adoption coming out of one of the major sporting enterprises in the U.S.

A national league team in the world of U.S Major League Baseball (MLB), the L.A Dodgers announced on Friday their intention to hold a token giveaway using the ERC-20 platform. As per the press release published by Insider, the Dodgers are planning the token giveaway for September 21 on the aforementioned platform established by Ethereum.

While the organisation has yet to clarify how they intend to manage this event, Chief Marketing Office, Lon Rosen reckons Ethereum and cryptocurrencies are a potential innovation for better sports experience. “We’re excited about our first-ever crypto giveaway, and to explore an entirely new marketplace with our fan base,” he said.

“We hope this piques the interest of Dodger fans and will help launch a new age of digital collectibles and promotions.”

The Dodger’s use of crypto tokens is certainly an unusual entry into sporting memorabilia. However; this is not the first time a major U.S sporting enterprise has been tied to cryptocurrency.

In June, the Sacramento Kings basketball team announced a partnership with Miningstore, a crypto hardware mining company. In that case, multiple Ethereum mining machines would be installed in the Sacramento area to raise money for scholarships. In terms of football, English Premiership team Wolverhampton Wanderers now carry crypto sponsorship on their arm.

It feels like this might just be the tip of the proverbial iceberg where crypto and sports are concerned. We wait and see who will take the plunge next…
