BitMEX bags Times front-page ad 10 years after Bitcoin Genesis block

Crypto-exhange BitMEX takes out a front-page add in The Times to thank Bitcoin’s creator.

Though many marked the 10th anniversary of Bitcoin in line with the publication of the publication of the cryptocurrency’s white paper back in October, another anniversary of note comes up today. 10 years ago saw the first Bitcoin block mined, presumably by Satoshi – whoever that may be – himself.

Infamously, the pseudonymous creator of crypto as-we-know-it chose to reference a headline from The Times among the code of that first block, citing that day’s Front-page lead. The coinbase code read The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks, presumably as both a proof of the date and a sly reference to the perceived need for his creation.

Today, to mark the occasion – and that infamous encoded side-eye – BitMEX took out an add on the front page of that same august organ, thanking Satoshi for his work.

The seemingly simple message “Thanks Satoshi. We owe you one. Happy 10th Birthday Bitcoin” actually comes with a bit of code of its own. Subordinate to the main message is another line of text reading: 000000000000000000037e741045a99121918e6ee717108fc77ec40b7419a829.

This is the hash to BTC block 554, 509 which has a coinbase message of its own: “Thanks Satoshi/BTC.COM”, provided by none other than Jihan Wu of Bitmain. At least according to another tweet from BitMEX.

Well played all. Well played.
