Cryptocurrency mining apps removed from Google Play Store

Google has announced new restrictions for its Google Play Store…

Cryptocurrency mining apps have already felt the ire of Apple of late, who removed them from its App Store earlier this year. Now we learn that Google is following suit, and that crypto mining tools are being added to the list of restricted apps for its Google Play Store.

It’s part of a newly announced update of its policies, and Google specifically now cites the following as a new restriction:

Cryptocurrencies

We don’t allow apps that mine cryptocurrency on devices. We permit apps that remotely manage the mining of cryptocurrency.“

On the flip side, the Google Play Store does still allow apps the remote manage cryptocurrency mining, so it’s not a full-on, flat-out ban. However, the new restrictions, as outlined above, do come into force pretty much immediately.
