Cryptocurrency exchange Hitbtc is in the crosshairs of John McAfee…
The rising power of cryptocurrency exchanges has been a hot topic in the community these past few months, and it’s something we looked at in more detail here.
What’s clear is that it’s an issue that’s not going away, and also one that is becoming more well known.
Wading into the debate now is John McAfee, one of the highest profile and most outspoken voices in the crypto community. He’s aimed his ire both at crypto exchanges in general, and specifically at Hitbtc, one of the largest out there. In fact, he’s called for an outright boycott of Hitbtc in one of his latest Tweets…
The crypto exchanges have become the thing that we have originally fought against. Their power is immense. Hitbtc, for example, has increased suffering for millions of poor people who cannot afford the minimum buy-in since it is greater than their monthly income. Boycott them.

What’s his specific beef with Hitbtc? The specifics are unclear, but McAfee doubled down in a second Tweet…
.@hitbtc I will be your worst enemy until you prove that you are aligned with our community and are truly interested in helping the poor. You have not done shit to help access the only free healthcare in the world.

The only sign of a specific response from Hitbtc has come in this Twitter exchange here…
My account has been frozen along with hundreds of people that write us everyday. Please take fair warning and do not use Hitbtc! What an unbelievable step backwards for the crypto community. https://t.co/OzHgWkWNCD

Aside from that, there’s been no formal response. But we’ll keep an eye on the story and update as we get more…
