Adena Friedman, CEO of stock exchange Nasdaq, has spoke about the future of cryptocurrency calling it the “right next step in the space of currency”.
In an interview on the CNN podcast Boss Files, Friedman said: “How it evolves and which of the cryptocurrencies may or may not be the one that ultimately gets embraced, I think that really the jury is still out on that.
“But I do think the idea of more a globalised payment mechanism that is more efficient than what we have today allows for money to transfer across countries and certainly supports the internet economy.”
She went on to say that she anticipates blockchain’s transformation of the financial world to happen slowly, with the first uses being primarily in unregulated and less efficient markets.
“It takes a village to make it work, but people are going to be highly motivated if we show that the use cases bring a lot of efficiency,” she added.
Last month, the company said it would consider becoming a cryptocurrency exchange once the market matures, and is already providing its technology to other crypto exchanges.
