Nevada county becomes first to propose recording marriages using blockchain tech

Need your marriage certificate in a hurry? Washoe County will soon have you covered… Thanks to the Ethereum blockchain.

According to The Next Web, Washoe County near Reno, Nevada will soon be the first place in America that will record marriages using the blockchain tech.

The County Recorder’s Office is working with Nevada-based firm Titan Seal to test a blockchain-based system for digitisign marriage certificates and recording the nuptuals on the Ethereum blockchain, ensuring protection from loss, damage, or changes. It will also  make the process quicker, and cheaper, for anyone wanting to get hold of their paperwork quickly, by enabling certificates to be sent straight to an email inbox. Handy, should you want to prove your betrothal, but not have the time to wait for your certificate – or want to foot the costs of couriering the paperwork for next-day delivery.

It may be small scale, and a little esoteric, but Titan Seal’s work does point to Blockchain’s ability to be applied in a whole range of legal situations, and this rather strange use for it could be the first of a great many in government.
