A shopping centre in Slovenia continues to push towards being a ‘Bitcoin City’…
Last week, we reported on how Brisbane was becoming the world’s first cryptocurrency-friendly airport, with several stores and outlets on site accepting crypto payments. Now, though, a shopping mall in Slovenia is looking to go one better, as it pilots being the first major shopping centre in the world to be crypto-friendly.
The shopping centre in question is BTC City Ljubljana, located in the Slovenian capital. And a trial is underway involving 24 stores in the centre, and 150 customers. Those customers no longer need to take cash or cards with them on their shopping travels, with payments being made via phone and crypto instead.
If all goes to plan, then the centre will become what’s being described as a ‘Bitcoin City’. In the words of the company behind the project, “the development of BTC City into a Bitcoin City is an important step towards the realisation of BTC’s openness-oriented strategy, providing its customers and business partners with freedom and choice regarding their purchases with new forms of payment”.
Eligma’s Elipay technology is being used to underpin the cryptocurrency payments system, and already the shopping centre has crypto ATMs on site.
