Walmart to launch ‘smarter’ shipping using blockchain

Walmart has filed a patent indicating that the retail company wants to use blockchain technology to create a smarter delivery tracking system.

The ‘smart package’ as the patent describes would have a device that records information about the package contents, location and more, and stores it on the blockchain.

The application reads: “These online customers many times seek to purcahse items that may require a controlled environment and further seek to have greater security in the shipping packaging that the items are shipped in.”

There’s a hint that Walmart may want to expand the technology to other areas, including autonomous vehicles or drones.

“[The blockchain component will have] key addresses along the chain of custody, including hashing with a seller private key address, a courier private key address and a buyer private key address,” the filing continues.
